The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) led by A&T alumnus Terry Bellamy ’77 will be celebrating the opening of the local 11th Street bridge on Saturday September 7th from Noon to 3pm.
Free and open to all, this festive community event will commemorate the completion and full opening of the new local bridge portion of the larger 11th Street Bridge Project – which is the largest project in the District Department of Transportation’s history – and also again honor fallen Metropolitan Police Officer Kevin J. Welsh.
Schedule to take place rain or shine, the celebration requires fully closing the local bridge to motor vehicles for the day to allow event staging and attendees to fully experience the four-lane bridge’s various amenities, such as its 14-foot-wide shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path and two pedestrian overlooks that provide a scenic southward view of the Anacostia River.
Participants also will be able to enjoy some of DC’s finest fare from local food trucks and a host of family-friendly activities, including a kids’ zone and local entertainment.
In addition, Mayor Vincent C. Gray will lead a formal program with District Council Members and representatives from DDOT, the Federal Highway Administration and the Metropolitan Police Department. This will include dedicating the bridge to Officer Welsh, a veteran police officer who gave his life in the line of duty and for whom the old 11th Street Outbound Freeway Bridge replaced as part of the bridge project had also been named.
Time: 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.
