Senior Associate, Media Relations

The National League of Cities is seeking and experienced professional to be responsible for assisting in developing messaging of the National League of Cities and organizing the association’s media profile, participating in the development of outreach strategies, develop and maintain relationships with reporters and bloggers, coordinate administrative and logistical support for media relations activities and stakeholder outreach efforts.

The National League of Cities is seeking and experienced professional to be responsible for assisting in developing messaging of the National League of Cities and organizing the association’s media profile, participating in the development of outreach strategies, develop and maintain relationships with reporters and bloggers, coordinate administrative and logistical support for media relations activities and stakeholder outreach efforts.
Examples of Work
Assists in creating and driving NLC messages to a wider audience, including media, members, and strategic partners. Serves as a creative thinker who understands how to drive a story and present the organization’s position. Assists in carrying out a comprehensive media relations program that enhances the image and stature of NLC and the municipalities it represents.
Serves as a point of contact to the media and stakeholders to answer inquires and make proactive pushes on NLC messages. Communicate with other departments and develop internal relationships to ensure consistency across the organization and monitoring the media for opportunities. Serves as a media advisor to NLC members and staff including arranging interviews, developing talking statements on emerging issues, and preparing speeches and talking points.
Analyzes daily media coverage, including the production of a daily log, filing all clips and updating news release files. Tracks and develops media lists; disseminates news releases and helps identify targeted mailing lists.
Coordinates the preparation, conduct, and follow-up for NLC media events, including providing logistical support.
Staffs press operations at NLC conferences, including handling all on-site logistics, press credentialing. Compiles evaluation summaries and final registration reports after each program.
Works within content management system for NLC website; updates Press Room pages; supports efforts to maintain NLC home page.
Verifies and tracks expenditures; processes bills; assists with completion of expense reports; maintains files and handles correspondence and supplies for the media relations team.
Occasional travel required.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in public policy, communications, journalism, or related field; master’s preferred. Minimum 2 – 4 years progressively responsible experience in communications, media relations, or public affairs preferably with some direct connection to government affairs, or a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of media outreach and strategy; experience in providing communications services and in providing high visibility media outreach through an established network of media connections; excellent writing, speaking, editing, and organizational skills; strong grasp of media technology including websites, blogs, podcasts, social media, video; demonstrated ability to work independently and under pressure; and excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
