The Montgomery County Planning Department is seeking an experienced and creative communications manager to oversee and execute a broad communications and outreach program for the Montgomery County Planning Department. Working closely with the Planning Director, the communications manager keeps abreast of the departmental work program and publicizes key projects and initiatives in diverse, innovative ways. The communications manager supervises a Production Team responsible for creating publications and content for the website montgomeryplanning.org. The position is responsible for managing a staff of 6-8 employees.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience communicating a message to advance an agenda and presenting a positive face to the public and key constituents.
Ability to envision publicity campaigns to highlight the Department to its various audiences.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Experience writing content for the web and envisioning new web tools.
Ability to use social media (Facebook, Twitter, blogs)
Experience planning, directing and supervising the work of subordinates.
Ability to work well with others, both superiors and subordinates, and forge compromises.
Experience writing press releases that re-purpose complex topics for general audiences.
Experience producing video, both developing content as well as on-air experience.
Experience writing concise, compelling summaries to be re-purposed online, in annual reports and in weekly newsletters.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Experience planning meetings and events.
A degree in Communication or Journalism is strongly desired.

Generate content for website, envision new web tools.
Write press releases, blog posts, e-blasts, rack cards, etc. to publicize key projects and initiatives.
Manage Montgomery Plans cable show: Develop ideas, set up shoots, write scripts, conduct on-air interviews and co-host.
Plan community meetings in concert with planners, provide graphic and logistical support.
Oversee production of the Department's Semi-Annual Report: set schedule, gather information, write content, identify images and oversee design.
Supervise the production team and perform annual evaluations.
Stay abreast of current projects and initiatives.
Support the Planning Board Chair and planning director with communications needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in business administration, management, or related subject; and
2. Eight years of progressively responsible administrative experience related to the needs of the department to which the position is assigned, including two years of progressively responsible supervisory or project management experience; or
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
