POSITION SUMMARY
An Accountant I/General is the intermediate level of work examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying general accepted accounting principles in order to modify and maintain the department's accounting systems, prepare financial reports or statements, and give fiscal advice to management. Account I/General perform general accounting activities that are complex and broad in nature and are responsible for entering information into appropriate computerized systems and databases and maintain detailed accounting records.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university;
Two (2) years' experience as a staff accountant
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a Non-profit accounting environment;
Experience using inter-related databases.
Substitution:
Associates degree in accounting and five (5) years' experience as a Staff Accountant
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Post financial transactions
Reviews, maintain and reconcile accounts, making adjustments, corrections, and journal entries as appropriate;
Maintains files of disbursement, and receipts;
Maintains paper and electronic copies of bank and investment statements and secure storage of all financial documents;
Works closely with the College to disburse funds from restricted accounts, including grants and scholarships;
Maintains permanent files for established policy and procedures;
Participates in the annual audit preparation including reconciliation and support schedule, prep-support for financial schedules and annual audit;
Provides annual reports of financial activity to scholarship donors; prepare award letters for scholarships, send notification Financial Aid Department and BCCC Finance Department;
Prepare annual operational budget;
May work with contracted accountants;
May maintain records of fundraising revenues and expenses and ensures fundraising budgets are submitted;
Compiles and analyze financial information to prepare journal entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts and documenting business transactions;
Monitor compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and College procedures;
Review and investigate inconsistencies in financial entries, documents and reports;
Provides monthly financial reports to grant manager;
Perform compliance research and monitor legislation and regulatory restrictions on College grant funding;
Ensure all grant related financial activities comply with current federal, state and local regulatory and contractual mandates;
Monitor legislation, regulations, developments and changes related to grants and other financial assistance; keep abreast of all compliance, reporting, accounting and auditing changes;
Responds from College units, vendors, and financial institutions regarding accounts and transactions; searches accounts and transaction files for information to answer inquires;
Communicates with various College personnel, private and state agencies and the college community to provide ongoing, accurate accounting information and support;
Other related duties as assigned.
